Make your own dried strawberry chips for a healthy and tasty snack!

Fresh strawberries make a great snack but turning them into strawberry chips adds a fun variety to this beloved finger food.  Dried strawberry chips are irresistible: add to trail mix, serve as a stand-alone snack, enjoy as a topping for granola or ice cream, and more!

Even better, dried strawberry chips are shelf-stable!  Take advantage of strawberries on sale, and stock up to make a big batch of strawberry chips to enjoy for months to come.  If they last that long before everyone at your house gobbles them up!

How to make dried strawberry chips

  1. Start with firm, medium to large strawberries.
  2. Slice into thin, uniform rounds.
  3. Dry in a dehydrator or bake in an oven.

Step one: choose firm, large berries.

Large, firm berries will make for easier slicing.  Small or soft berries will just turn into a squishy, juicy mess.

Step two: slice.

A mandoline food slicer will produce more consistent slices, which will dry more uniformly.  However, if you don’t have a mandoline slicer, you can use a sharp knife.

Step three: dry.

I recommend a dehydrator for this step.  Arrange slices in a single layer on dehydrator trays and dry on the fruit setting for 6-8 hours.  You want them to be completely dry, and they will crisp up after cooling.

If you don’t have a dehydrator, you can also try baking strawberry slices in the oven.  I’ve never tried this method myself, but recommend experimenting with a 200-degree Fahrenheit oven and parchment-lined baking sheets.

You may need to turn the slices after about 60 minutes and continue baking for another 15-30 minutes.
