Did you know it’s possible to freeze waffle batter?  It’s true!  I learned this nifty piece of culinary information while preparing for the arrival of Baby Brother, who is now almost 11 months old.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t often feel like whipping up a batch of waffles first thing in the morning.  My boys love waffles, though, so I love this trick for making them “fresh” without actually mixing up the batter at breakfast time.

This way, you can mix up the batter whenever it’s convenient (or whenever it’s more convenient than first thing in the morning, that is), and freeze it in batches for a quick future breakfast.

1. Mix your waffle batter.  I like this easy paleo recipe from Eat Like a Dinosaur by the Paleo Parents.

2. Ladle or pour the batter into freezer containers.  I use glass jars whenever possible.

3. Be sure to label the container(s)!

4. Place container(s) in the freezer.

5. The night before you plan to make waffles, thaw the batter overnight.

6. The next morning, make your waffles just as though you’d mixed up the batter right then!

7. Enjoy!  We like our waffles with maple syrup and fresh berries.

Note: A thin layer of oxidation occurred on my frozen batter.  I just scraped and discarded that thin layer–the rest of the batter was fine.

How great is that?

For small batches of waffles that will be consumed in one meal, I like to keep the waffles warm in the oven until the last waffle is finished.
