The Solution
Well, here’s what I came up with to hide this super-functional, but not-so-pretty space:
This awesome iron drapery rod & matching clips from Pottery Barn + three shower curtains on clearance at Target.
The shower curtains were less than $6 each, which balanced out the hefty price tag on the PB rod and clips.
Since I don’t sew, I also paid our dry cleaner to alter the shower curtain a bit. It wasn’t long enough, so she added a piece from one of the extra curtains I’d bought. (More of the second curtain was used to create a skirt for our utility sink, while the final curtain now hides the open pantry shelves facing The Sorting Closet. I’ll do another post about the rest of the room some other time…)
And here are the chalkboard labels that replaced the lovely neon pink sticky notes…
Our new Sorting Closet has been in use for well over a year, and I love love love it every single day.
It’s working just the way I’d envisioned: the six laundry bags are perfect for holding our ongoing dirty laundry, and the boys continue to sort their own laundry into each bag every morning. The floor space at the bottom is just the right size and shape to accommodate large piles of sheets or towels when necessary, or filthy outdoor work clothes, etc. When it’s time to wash a load of laundry, I simply unhook the appropriate bag and dump its contents right into the washing machine.
The rod above continues to hold extra hangers and clothes awaiting their appointment with the ironing board. And we still have the shelf, too, which offers lots of storage space for various supplies.
The best part of all is that I can hide the entire closet in the blink of an eye. I love it!
No longer do guests–or residents–have to hurdle piles of laundry to reach the powder room. No longer do I struggle to finish multiple loads of laundry prior to their arrival.
Hooray for a stylish, organized, hard-working space!
