If you’ve ever wondered how to attach knobs or pegs to a wall, you’re going to love this easy solution.

This method has come in handy in every house we’ve owned, because I am a big fan of hooks!  Hooks, pegs, and knobs are essential for keeping things tidy and can be fun for decorating, too.

In our last house, we used this technique to attach knobs used as curtain tiebacks, a decorative knob to for hanging a sign, and probably other purposes I can’t think of at the moment.

The picture below shows the curtain tiebacks and a vintage wooden knob we used to hang a little red sign in the nursery at our previous house.

In our current farmhouse, we used this method to attach pegs to the laundry room wall for drying wet laundry.

With a family of five on a working farm, you can believe these pegs get used constantly!  We use them for drying wet (dirty) towels and kitchen cloths before tossing them into a laundry bin and we also hang clean laundry to dry on these handy pegs.

You might notice that our peg formation is not exactly symmetrical: the first peg on the left is up, and the last peg on the right is down.  If I’d been aiming for pure aesthetics, I’d have placed both end pegs on top or on the bottom.

Instead, my goal was to squeeze in as many pegs as possible.  Our laundry room is very small and hardly anyone sees this corner.  I figured that having one more peg was more practical than making it look perfect.

Repurposed pegs

One of the things I loved about this mini-project was that we used things we already had on hand, like a vintage accordion rack!

I’d been scouring Etsy and other sources for the perfect hooks to mount in the laundry room, when I remembered the accordion rack.  It was the perfect color, and the pegs were the perfect size!  I didn’t want to use the actual rack, though, just the pegs.

Pictured below is another, similar accordion rack because I forgot to take a picture of the one we used before we disassembled it.  Oops!

We simply detached the pegs from the accordion rack, and used our trusty method to attach them to the wall.  These pegs are super secure, super cute, and I use them every day!

How to Attach Knobs or Pegs to a Wall

Ready?  This is super simple.  It’s one of those methods that can be hard to identify but seems so obvious once you know how to do it.

Supplies:

  • knobs or pegs
  • drywall anchors (skip these if your wall is wood)
  • double ended screws (skip these if your knobs have a bolt)

Tools:

  • pencil
  • measuring tape
  • level
  • drill
  • drill bit (slightly smaller diameter than the drywall anchors)
  • rubber mallet

Instructions:

  1. If your knobs or pegs do not have a bolt or a hole, carefully drill a hole in the back of each one.  The diameter of this hole should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the double ended screw.
  2. Insert a double ended screw into each knob or peg.

  3. Measure and level and make a light pencil mark on the wall where each peg will go.
  4. For drywall or sheetrock: Drill a pilot hole for each peg, at your pencil marks.  The diameter of this hole should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the drywall anchor.  For a wood wall, such as the shiplap in our laundry room, you can skip the drywall anchor and simply drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the double ended screw.
  5. Insert drywall anchors into the pilot holes in the wall.  Use a rubber mallet if necessary.  For a wood wall, you can skip this step and go directly to step six by screwing your peg into the pilot hole in the wall.
  6. Screw the peg into the drywall anchor.
