I may have mentioned this a few times {ahem}, but I’ve become such a big fan of cloth diapering with wool that I can’t stop crowing about it!

Seriously–if you have even the teeniest interest in cloth diapering, I highly recommend wool.

How I Became a Wool Convert

Baby Brother is my third baby, but my first in cloth diapers.  Before he arrived, I was on the fence about cloth diapering.  I just wasn’t sure I could add “one more thing” to my already full plate.  I also wasn’t sure about the whole poop thing.  And I was utterly overwhelmed by all the options.

But let me tell you: if someone had clued me in about the awesomeness of wool covers, especially paired with super absorbent cotton layers, I’d have chosen this route from the beginning.

As it is, I’m in the process of selling my stash of 20 BumGenius pocket diapers.  We’re keeping our Flip covers, using those during the day while also experimenting with wool covers for daytime use.  (Stay tuned for another post about the most awesome wool diaper cover pants ever…)

At night and during naps, however, we’ve used wool exclusively for a few months now.  I love it!  I’m a total wool convert–it’s what’s sold me for good on cloth diapering.

Wool Is Expensive…Or Is It?

One possible catch with wool diaper covers is the cost.  Some folks look at the prices attached to {some} wool covers and write off the whole affair as too pricey.

I’m here to tell you that cloth diapering with wool can actually be cheaper than cloth diapering with pocket diapers, all-in-one’s and even basic covers like the Flip.

Affordable Wool Diaper Covers

Today I want to tell you about an economical and environmentally friendly option for purchasing wool diaper covers: etsy!

Lots of enterprising gals–many of them work-at-home-moms–have figured out how to fashion high quality diaper covers and pants (called longies) from cast off wool sweaters.  How cool is that?

The Paper Bag Owl Company

The adorable kelly green wool soaker and dark gray longies with an apple applique {pictured above} came from The Paper Bag Owl Company on etsy.

The soaker shorties are amazingly thick and “bulletproof” (a cloth diapering term meaning “ain’t nothin’ gettin’ through that sucker”), and the longies are allowing me to experiment with using wool during the day.

These thick, felted wool shorties have an extra layer sewn inside, right in the wet zone. (The layer is cable knit–how cute is that!?)

Lisa from The Paper Bag Owl Company was awesome to work with, and her prices are very reasonable.  She accepts custom requests, or you can choose from the items currently available in her shop.

Disclosure: Lisa provided the longies for review, but I purchased the green soaker.  I like them both, but the green shorties are definitely my favorite.
