Now that you know which features to consider in an essential oil diffuser, let me share the diffusers we’ve used here at the Yankee Homestead…
Diffusers I’ve Used {Mid-range}
1. Whisper
Pros
- Less expensive than doTerra’s official diffusers.
- LOVE the timer functions–many options, and can run all night.
- Disposable oils cup! This is a great compromise between glass parts (more expensive) and plastic parts (eventually get cloudy and discolored). The disposable cups last for a long time, and are not too expensive to replace when you run out. The diffuser comes with a few cups to get you started.
Cons
- It’s still a bit pricey (about $80), especially if you’re looking at purchasing several diffusers.
- Can tip over more easily, which is really only an issue if the diffuser will be used near children. 🙂
Other details
- The Whisper is tall and skinny (as opposed to the short and squatty Ultrasonic Classic, below).
- The finish resembles brushed nickel.
- Optional light–we always kept ours turned off.
- It’s available from AromaTools, which means it goes on sale occasionally. There is also a quantity discount on all AT products, so if you know multiple friends looking to purchase the same diffuser, you can save a bit on the price.
2. Ultrasonic Classic
Pros
- Even less expensive, at about $60. (We have several of these.)
- Very sturdy–won’t tip over.
- Multiple timer settings.
- Good bang for your buck–This is the one I usually recommend as a starter diffuser. UPDATE: I can no longer recommend this diffuser.
Cons
- Plastic parts that come into contact with the oils. If you order the black model (with a black interior), discoloration will not be an issue inside the main part of the diffuser. But no matter which color you choose, the top (lid) will be a sort of transparent plastic, which will get cloudy. Perhaps if you’re super-vigilant about cleaning your diffuser between uses, you could avoid this, but for me that’s not very realistic. It doesn’t bother me much, though. Our bedroom diffusers are all hidden away; the only Ultrasonic Classic out in the open is the one in our kitchen, and it sort of blends into its surroundings. So this isn’t a big deal to me.
- Not as many timer settings, but still runs through the night. (Although the diffuser can run all night, I’m pretty sure the oils get used up within a few hours.)
Other details:
- Comes in a variety of colors/finishes.
- Optional light–again, we always keep ours turned off.
- There is a small light on the front that comes on to show which setting you’ve selected. In a dark bedroom at night, this light is a big deal to me. Now that our diffusers are hidden, it’s not an issue. Before we hid the diffusers, I simply covered up the little light. [I’ll talk more about that In the final post of this series, and show pictures of how and where we use our diffusers.]
UPDATE:
I can no longer recommend the Ultrasonic Classic due to manufacturing issues. The quality of the newer models is not the same as the models I purchased years ago.

Do all of these run on batteries or do any have plug ins?
Diane–They all plug in. I’m noticing now that the pictures don’t show a cord, but they all come with one. Hope that helps!
When I click on the Ultrasonic classic to get more information the page is not available. Where can we purchase/review it
Angela–Clicking on the picture should take you to Amazon, but it seems the Ultrasonic diffuser is not currently available. I’m checking around on a few other sites–I’ve purchased these diffusers online from Diffuser World and Puritan’s Pride, but can’t seem to find it listed currently. 🙁 I’ll keep looking and keep you posted…

And this site lists it as out of stock, with an ETA of mid-July 2013. I’m hoping that’s an indication that other retailers will have it back in stock soon…

I am very new at this. It is just the two of us. All of our children have families of their own. Thinking I should buy multiple diffusers for different rooms. But then do you ever run more than one at a time? I am also assuming that you just wash them out if you want to change oils?
Yes, we have a diffuser in the kitchen / main living area, as well as one in each bedroom upstairs. My husband also has one at his office. During the day, I run the one in the kitchen. At night, when needed, we run the bedroom diffusers. And yes, technically you should clean out the diffusers between uses, but practically speaking that doesn’t always happen! 🙂
HI..I have a question. I just ordered and am sending back two ‘larger’ humidifiers..realizing that what I really want are the smaller actual diffusers. I am intrigued by the 15 seconds/minute statistic. The Ultrasonics from Diffuser World have this? thanks.Betsy
