Did you read the first three posts in this series on essential oil diffusers?

Today I will show you how, where and when we use essential oil diffusers here at my Yankee Homestead.

UPDATE: I’m no longer using the Ultrasonic Classic Diffuser.  Learn about my current favorite diffusers here: My Top 3 Essential Oil Diffusers.

This Utrasonic Classic diffuser lives in our kitchen. It’s actually diffusing in the picture!

Where we Keep our Diffusers

  • In the kitchen
  • In each bedroom
Little Brother's Diffuser
  • Save
This Utrasonic Classic diffuser lives in Little Brother’s room, hidden in the top drawer of his dresser. (Next to his sound machine and tissue box, by the way.) I love that we can pull the drawer open at night for the sound machine and diffuser, and then hide the gadgets away in the morning simply by closing the drawer.

How we use our Diffusers

  • To eliminate odors (in the kitchen): Lemon, Wild Orange, Purify
  • To support the immune system (especially during the winter): OnGuard
  • To maintain clear airways (in bedrooms at night): Breathe, Eucalyptus, Peppermint
Older Brother's Difuser

Older Brother has no drawers in his bedside table, so we just placed his Utrasonic Classic diffuser behind his ipod docking station. I don’t love seeing the gadgets out in plain sight, but it works fine for his room. (My apologies for the smudgy docking station and messy table! Clearly, there was no stylist working this photo shoot. Just keepin’ it real, folks.)
  • To aid in sleeping (in bedrooms at night): Lavender, Chamomile, Serenity
  • To promote alertness, aka when I’m really dragging (in the kitchen): Wild Orange, Peppermint
  • To help lessen anxious feelings (in the kitchen): Lavender, Serenity, Balance
  • To make the house smell like Christmas (in the kitchen): Holiday Joy Blend
Master Bedroom Difuser

The Utrasonic Classic diffuser in our master bedroom also hides in a drawer beside the bed. Again, I love the practicality of opening the drawer for nighttime diffusing, and closing the drawer in the morning to keep the gadget out of sight.
[By the way, we DIYed our nightstands and have been thrilled with the results–Check it out here: Master Bedroom Makeover: Nightstands in Distress.]

Not to ask silly questions, but how do you plug in the dresser diffusers? Is the cord running out of the back of the drawer/dresser? Or do plug it in and in plug it each time? Not that that would be bad… Just trying to figure it out.

Heather–Mr. Native Texan drilled a hole in the back of each dresser, so that the cord can run up over the back of the drawer, and then out the hole in the dresser back and remained plugged in at all times. Plugging in and unplugging every time would drive me crazy! 🙂

I read all four parts of your diffuser article. I wanted to share that I have the Lotus because it came with my doTerra kit. Personally, I think it is awkward to use. You have to clean it occasionally (an awkward process) and the blue light is irritating. You have a little cup to measure water in, but the diffuser does not use up all the water, so you don’t really know how much to add. If you want to pour out what is in the Lotus, you will get it all over everything because of the design. The only good thing about it is that you can detach the cord before trying to dump it out. Another negative is that it’s big! You’d have to like the look of it. Personally, I’m with you and think it’s cheesy-looking. I think I will try one of these little ones you said you like. I find myself not using my oils all the time simply because I don’t care for the diffuser. Thanks for all the info!

Barbara–I’m glad you found the diffuser series helpful. And thanks for sharing your feedback on the Lotus diffuser. 🙂 Good to know! If you find one you like better, let me know! Happy diffusing!

My favorite diffusing oils are spearmint & purify simply because opi enjoy the clean smell. I also enjoy a blend of neorealism, jasmine bergamot & orange.

I love Spearmint in the diffuser!
