Wonderful Books about Snow

At the Yankee Homestead, one of the best things about snow is all the wonderful books that are just perfect for snowy day reading.  In fact, we never know which one to read first–there are so many great snow books in our collection!

Yesterday, the boys chose The Big Snow

Wonderful Poems about Snow

We’ve also got a favorite Snowy Day Poem, which is actually a “special outdoor song” according to its author.  Check it out here: Our Favorite Winter Poem.

One of our favorite books of poetry for kids also contains several other fantastic poems about snow, like When All the World is Full of Snow.  Older Brother actually just finished memorizing that one, which was perfect timing for our Big Snow!

When All the World is Full of Snow

I never know
Just where to go,
When all the world
Is full of snow.

I do not want
To make a track,
Not even
To the shed and back.

I only want
To watch and wait,
While snow moths settle
On the gate,

And swarming frost flakes
Fill the trees
With billions
Of albino bees.

I only want
Myself to be
As silent as
A winter tree,

To hear the swirling
Stillness grow,
When all the world
Is full of snow.

Just the Right Poem (or Story or Song)

I realize that what I’m about to say makes me sound like a complete literary nerd, but I’m okay with that.  🙂

There is something absolutely satisfying about having just the right poem (or story or song) to go along with any given circumstance, season or event.

If you’ve never experienced this phenomenon, I invite you to give it a try.  Who knows, you just might create some family memories in the process!
