This one goes out to my fellow anxious flyers…
I’ve been a lot of places, y’all. In my younger days, I visited more countries than I can count. I lived in Texas for almost ten years, flying home to the northeast on a regular basis. Travel was my jam. I loved adventures!
About seven years ago, around the time we moved from Texas to northern Virginia (and also, interestingly, around the time when my thyroid function was headed downhill), I began to develop anxiety on airplanes.
More specifically, I became extremely claustrophobic. It’s not the fear of crashing, per se, but the fear of being stuck on the plane. Stuck in a tight space (my seat) inside a tight space (the plane) for an indefinite period of time (a delay).
I hope you’re not getting nervous just from reading this!
Oddly enough, I haven’t flown much in the five years since I began using essential oils. So there wasn’t much opportunity to test oily protocols for my anxious feelings on airplanes.
Until last month, when I traveled from northern Virginia to Salt Lake City, Utah for doTERRA’s annual convention. It was my first time to attend and I really wanted to be there. I wasn’t about to let a little travel anxiety stand in the way of this trip, so I put together a little airplane survival kit and stashed it in my carry-on bag.
Boy, did those oils ever help!

Every time I began to feel anxious, I’d use one or more of my airplane survival remedies. Of course, I also prayed or dove into conversation or immersed myself in a gripping novel. I should also point out that my Bible study girls were praying, too. Thanks, ladies!
The good news is that I was able to remain calm for a total of four flights (two to get there and two to get back). Whew!
Anxious flyers: no matter what your particular travel-related triggers are, you’ll find this airplane survival kit helpful…
Essential Oil Survival Kit for Anxious Flyers
This is the winning combo of oily remedies that helped me survive four flights.
1. Calming Trio in 2 ml Rollers
Marjoram + Frankincense + Wild Orange
My friend Katie suggested this combo and I instantly knew it would help. I love all three oils, and each has calming and grounding properties.
Tiny 2 ml rollers were perfect for my survival kit. I filled the rollers mostly with essential oil, then added a few drops of carrier oil to help with skin absorption.
I rolled each oil onto my wrists and the back of my neck before boarding, at take off and landing, and any time in between when I began to feel anxious.
2. Breathe Inhaler
This was amazing! A gal from my team’s Facebook support group recommended inhaling Breathe when necessary (on the airplane). So I made a Breathe inhaler and huffed on that thing like crazy.
I’m already an essential oils convert, but that Breathe inhaler converted me all over again. It helped so much!
The oils in the Breathe Respiratory Blend are calming and they keep the airways open for normal breathing. During anxious moments, I sometimes to forget to breathe! It was so easy to simply pull out my Breathe inhaler whenever I needed it, and just breathe deeply.

3. Peppermint Beadlets
Similar to the Breathe blend, Peppermint promotes open airways. It’s also great for calming queasy tummies, which can be helpful during turbulence. Such as our twenty minute roller coaster ride descent into Denver.
As a bonus, it freshens your breath! I loved having my Peppermint beadlets on hand.
4. Peppermint Oil
Peppermint also helps to cool the body. During moments of “heightened concern”, I get really hot and start shedding clothes like crazy. No kidding. My shoes and socks come off, then the scarf, jacket…any extra layers are removed.
The Peppermint beadlets alone actually helped me stay cool. When I needed an extra boost, I applied Peppermint oil directly to my pulse points: behind the ears, on my wrists and inner elbows, the back of the neck, temples, etc. It really works!
And there you have it, my top four essential oil strategies for anxious flyers. May your next flight be a calm one!
