Gardeners Hand Scrub: My Favorite Way to Clean Up After Digging in the Dirt

If you’ve spent any amount of time in the garden—especially the kind of time that involves pulling weeds, planting seedlings, or harvesting root vegetables—you know the struggle: dirt gets everywhere. Under your nails, in the creases of your knuckles, even in places you didn’t know could get dirty.

For years, my go-to solution for scrubbing off the grime was Lava Soap. It did the job, more or less. The gritty texture helped lift the dirt from all those stubborn cracks and crevices, and I appreciated its no-nonsense approach to serious hand cleaning. But it wasn’t perfect.

For starters, I never found a good way to store the bar between uses. It always ended up soggy, stuck to the soap dish, or mysteriously missing altogether. And while it cleaned well, my hands always felt dry and tight afterward—like they’d been stripped of every last bit of moisture. Not ideal when you’re already dealing with calluses and sun exposure from farm life.

I’ll admit, I was a little wary of the ingredients in Lava Soap, but after digging around (pun intended), it seems like it might be okay. Still, I wanted something better. Something that felt good to use, smelled nice, and didn’t leave my hands feeling like sandpaper.

Enter: my favorite Gardeners Hand Scrub

This simple, homemade scrub has completely transformed my post-gardening cleanup routine. It’s gentle but effective, smells amazing, and leaves my hands feeling soft and moisturized—not like I’ve just wrestled with a pumice stone.

Here’s how I use it:

  1. First, I wash my hands with regular soap and water to get the top layer of dirt off.
  2. Then I scoop about a teaspoon (sometimes less) of the Gardeners Hand Scrub into my palms and scrub away. The texture is just gritty enough to lift the stubborn dirt, but not so harsh that it irritates my skin.
  3. If I’ve been especially deep in the soil, I’ll rinse and repeat with the scrub.
  4. Finally, I use a little bamboo nail brush to get under my fingernails. (I found the brush pictured here at Wegmans years ago—cute, simple, and super effective. Here’s a great alternative available on Amazon.)

The best part? My hands feel amazing afterward. Soft, smooth, and moisturized. No more dryness, no more mystery ingredients, and no more soggy soap bars.

scrub and scoop

This is the actual bowl of scrub–and scoop–that I keep inside the cupboard right above our utility sink. The little bamboo brush hangs right above the scrub, for easy access. Perfect!

I love that this Gardeners Hand Scrub fits right into my homestead lifestyle. It’s practical, sustainable, and easy to make with ingredients I trust. Plus, it’s a small but meaningful way to care for myself after a long day in the garden. Because let’s be honest—our hands do a lot of hard work, and they deserve a little TLC.

If you’re looking for a better way to clean up after digging in the dirt, give this Gardeners Hand Scrub a try. Your hands will thank you.
