This is the time of year when herbs are growing like crazy in our garden.  Yours, too?

Here’s an idea for putting herbs to good use, aside from the obvious culinary uses…

Include them in floral arrangements!

We recently hosted a large cookout and I had a fantastic time putting together a zillion small bouquets for decorating purposes.

By the way, this quote from Deborah Needleman in one of my new favorite decorating books really tickled me:

The thought of arranging flowers can unhinge even the most stylish people.  The secret to “doing” flowers is not to be intimidated.  You are the boss of them!

Since our herbs were so plentiful, I decided to be the boss of them by including several–mint, basil, artemisia and lavender–in the bouquets.  I was really pleased with the results, and made the following observations…

3 Benefits of Using Herbs in Flower Arrangements:

1.  Colors pop against the green backdrop

Adding green herbs–like mint and basil–to a bouquet of flowers allows the more colorful flowers to pop against their vibrant green backdrop.

2.  Fewer flowers required

Using herbs as the backbone of a bouquet means fewer flowers are required.  The herbs act as a filler, and your flowers will stretch farther.

3.  Fragrance

As you might imagine, herbs add major aroma to a bouquet, and consequently, to the bouquet’s surroundings. Indoors, that means a fresh, pleasant scent.  Outdoors, herbs can actually help to deter pesky insects.

Hooray for herbs!

Do you use herbs in flower bouquets?
What else do you do with prolific herbs, other than consume them?
Have you ever felt intimidated by “doing” flowers?
