Are wool bras and underwear itchy?
It may surprise you to hear that wool underclothes are not itchy and are, in fact, super comfy. The key factor here is merino wool, which is different from the coarse, thick, scratchy wool we tend to think of when it comes to wool clothing.
Merino wool’s smaller, smoother fibers make it quite comfortable to wear, even for underclothes.
Are wool bras and underwear hot?
Not at all! Although wool is a top choice when it comes to warm clothing, the truth is that wool helps to regulate body temperature.
When it’s cold outside, wool does indeed keep us warm. However, when it’s hot outside, wool can help to keep us cool. Isn’t wool amazing?
What are the benefits of wearing wool bras and underwear?
Merino wool is a powerhouse when it comes to performance and comfort. Here are some of its standout benefits:
- Natural & nontoxic – Wool is biodegradable, renewable, and free from harsh chemicals that can irritate the skin.
- Temperature Regulation – Keeps you warm in cold conditions and cool in hot weather, making it ideal for year-round wear.
- Moisture-Wicking – Absorbs sweat and moves it away from your skin, helping you stay dry.
- Odor-Resistant – Natural antimicrobial properties keep odors at bay, so you can wear it multiple times before washing.
- Soft & Comfortable – Unlike traditional wool, merino fibers are fine and soft, preventing itchiness.
- Breathable – Allows air to circulate, preventing overheating.
- Lightweight – Feels incredibly light and comfortable, whether you’re wearing a base layer or outerwear.
- Eco-Friendly & Sustainable – A renewable fiber that biodegrades naturally, reducing environmental impact.
- Durable & Elastic – Retains shape well and resists wear over time.
- Easy Care – Wrinkle-resistant and machine washable for easy maintenance.

I tried five wool bras to find one clear winner
In my quest to find the perfect merino wool everyday bra, I tried five types and four brands. Fortunately, as the demand for wool bras continues to grow, the options available to consumers also increase.
Here are the five wool bras I have personally tested, along with the pros and cons of each.
Good to know: Since every bra listed here provides the benefits listed above: odor-resistant, breathable, temperature regulating, moisture wicking, comfortable, durable, easy care, etc., I have included only the pros and cons that fall outside these qualifications.
All bras listed below are underwire-free.
1. Woolx Luna Bralette
My very first wool clothing purchase, the Woolx Luna Bralette is my go-to workout bra. I wish it were made from 100% or even 95% wool, but 85% is not too shabby. It’s very comfortable, the straps are adjustable in length and convertible to cross in the back, and they stay in place.
This bralette offers absolutely zero lift or shaping, so I personally would never wear it out and about. For workouts and outdoor walks, it’s completely sufficient. I have size Medium in black.
Pros
- Adjustable straps (length)
- Convertible straps (able to cross in the back)
- Supportive straps: wide but not too wide
- Secure straps stay in place and never come unhooked
Cons
- Not 100% wool: 85% Australian Merino Wool, 12% Nylon, 3% Spandex
- Silhouette: zero lift or shaping, bulky top seam in front
Underwear
The only undies I’ve tried from Woolx are their Lila Boy Shorts, which I do not care for. The fit doesn’t work for me and the seams are bulky. Like the Luna bralette, the material is 85% Australian Merino Wool, 12% Nylon, and 3% Spandex.

2. Woolly Active Tank (discontinued)
My second wool bra which is actually more of a cropped tank, the Woolly active tank works well as a sports bra under racerback tanks. It’s super comfy, durable, and breathable. Very well made. I have size Medium in navy.
I can’t wait to try Woolly’s NEW 95% wool racerback bralette when it comes back in stock in my size and color preference!
Pros
- 100% wool
- Smooth profile
Cons
- Fixed straps: not adjustable
- Length: non-adjustable straps are too long for my short torso
- Silhouette: this style flattens my already small chest
Underwear
I love Woolly’s 95% merino bikini briefs and would love to try their high waisted bikini briefs.

3. PAKA Essential Scoop Bralette
I bought these bras in three colors and really wanted to love them. However, the wide set straps and color schemes just don’t appeal to me. I do not find myself reaching for my PAKA bralettes nearly as often as my other wool bras.
I do wear my PAKA Essential Scoop Bralettes as backup workout bras, as well as for working in the garden or lounging around the house in loose fitting clothes. This bra has received rave reviews from 100 fans, so it’s worth consideration.
My favorite colors are black (the only solid color without a contrasting edge) and forage, which reads dark gray. I also have the birch color. All in size Medium.
Pros
- Good fit
- Smooth profile
- Sturdy and secure
- Very comfortable
- High percentage of healthy materials: 48% Tencel, 33% Organic Cotton, 14% Royal Alpaca, 5% Spandex
- Openings for adding your own padding
Cons
- Wide and widely spaced straps: better suited for wearing under t-shirts or long-sleeved shirts, and not under tank tops with thin straps or racerback tanks.
- Color scheme: personally, I prefer bras in a solid, monochromatic color. I don’t love the PAKA bralette color combos. The birch color especially would work better under light-colored shirts without the darker brown edging.
Underwear
While PAKA bras are not my favorite, I do love their Essential Briefs. The briefs are solid color, and forage is my favorite, which reads dark gray. I do love to wear my forage-colored set of Essential Scoop Bralette and Essential Brief.
4. Branwyn Busty Bra
This bra is very comfortable and supportive, perfect for gals with larger busts. I’m right on the edge at 36C and this bra (in size Medium) turned out to be a bit overkill for me. It works well under crew neck shirts or sweatshirts, but it definitely peeks out if I try to wear it under V-neck tops.
Pros
- Designed for C-cup sizes or larger: need extra room? This bra might be for you!
- Seamless
- Convertible straps
- Adjustable straps
Cons
- Not 100% wool: GLDNspun knit blend of 81% extra fine Merino wool, 14% nylon, 5% Spandex
- Not for V-necks tops: I cannot wear the busty bra under V-neck shirts as it peeks out. Gals with larger busts may not have this experience.
Underwear
I started out with Branwyn’s bikini undies and liked them well enough. Made from the same material as their bras, I love the seamless fit and breathable, odor-resistant qualities. See below for my absolute favorite merino undies…

5. Branwyn Essential Bralette
And finally, we come to my all-time favorite wool bra! I love this bra so much. I wear size medium, and the fit is fantastic. If it was made from 95-100% wool, I would love it even more but have decided that 81% wool is better than 0% wool.
This is the bra that I reach for almost every day. It’s designed for low-impact, everyday wear, and that’s exactly how I use it. It could definitely stand in as a workout bra, but I prefer to save my three Branwyn Essential Bralettes for every day, non-sweaty use.
I have black and light nude in size Medium.
Pros
- Seamless
- Convertible straps
- Adjustable straps
- Supportive without feeling restrictive
- Excellent lift and shaping
Cons
- Not 100% wool: GLDNspun knit blend of 81% extra fine Merino wool, 14% nylon, 5% Spandex
Underwear
My absolute favorite wool undies are Branwyn’s Essential Hipsters. Perfect for wearing under high waisted styles which are all the rage, they are the most flattering fit I have found. In fact, if I had to choose just one pair of wool bra and undies, it would be Branwyn’s Essential Bralette and Essential Hipster. I wear these combos on repeat!

Nontoxic wool bra inserts
One note about wool bras and the “sheer” factor: I have yet to find a padded wool bra. The tradeoff for a breathable bra made from healthy, nontoxic fibers is a less than smooth silhouette, if you know what I mean.
Hopefully, retailers will find a way to make a healthy wool bra with enough (nontoxic) padding to create a smooth silhouette, but until then, this is my solution: organic wool bra inserts.
I have three-pair pack in the non-PUL version, smaller size, neutral color. They are perfect with most shirts for everyday purposes, and I wear them often!
I still rely on synthetic bras to create a super smooth silhouette under more fitted or sheer tops. Wearing synthetic bras every now and then is much better than wearing them exclusively, like I did before I discovered merino wool underclothes.
I’m completely hooked on wearing wool underclothes and I can’t wait for you to give them a try, too!
