Where I grew up, Meadow Tea is about as common in summertime as ice cream, swimming pools and running barefoot through the grass.

It’s simple to make, if you’ve gotĀ access to a large patch of mint. Ā And if you know anything about growing the stuff, you’ll know that any patch of mintĀ isĀ a large one.

Mint is impossible to kill and spreads like wildfire. Ā It’s probably not an exaggeration to say that one patch of mint could fill an entire meadow over the courseĀ of time.

Maybe that’s why this mint tea is commonly calledĀ Meadow Tea…

How to Make Meadow Tea

These instructions came directly from my own mother, who has brewedĀ Meadow Tea for decades. Ā She introduced my boys to this official country drink of summer, and now I regularly discover large piles of mint in our kitchen, picked by small hands that can’t wait to hold a glass of ice cold Meadow Tea.How to Make Meadow Tea | Yankee Homestead

  1. Collect enough mint stalks to fill a plastic grocery bag about ¾ full.
  2. BringĀ a large pot of water to a boil.
  3. Wash the mintĀ thoroughly under running water (extract all bugs, dirt, weeds, etc.).How to Make Meadow Tea | Yankee Homestead
  4. Trim off the root ends of the stalks (where there areĀ no leaves).
  5. Add clean mint leaves to the boiling water, fully submerging allĀ the mint.
  6. Boil for 30 minutes over medium heat.
  7. Reduce heat andĀ simmer for another 30 minutes.
  8. Turn off heat and allow the teaĀ to cool on the stove top.
  9. Remove mint and strain the teaĀ into a pitcher (or two).
  10. Add sweetener of choice, to taste. Ā (I generally use 5-6 squirts of clear stevia per gallon.)
  11. Refrigerate, or toĀ serve immediately–pour the tea intoĀ a glass filled with ice cubes.

Kathleen, I googled how to make Meadow Tea, and look what popped up! It has been a while since I made it so I googled it to refresh my memory. I planted a mint plant last year, and it is growing strong. Thanks for the instructions!

Yay! Fun to see you here! Our mint is growing strong, too, and we were just discussing when to make our first batch of meadow tea. šŸ™‚
