How to Keep Apples from Browning…with essential oils
Did you know that essential oils can be used to keep apples from browning? It’s true!
Before I stopped buying juice, I often used a splash of orange juice to keep sliced apples looking fresh. Jarred lemon juice works, too, but can taste tart and isn’t always available. Freshly-squeezed-right-from-the-fruit lemon (or orange or any other citrus) juice is also an option, but I don’t always have citrus fruit on hand.
Not to worry, essential oils to the rescue!
How to Use Essential Oils to Keep Apples from Browning
1. Spray Bottle
Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil (see below) to a small spray bottle of water. Lightly mist the apple slices on both sides. (I like to spread out the apples in a single layer and spray, then flip and spray the other side.)
2. Bowl of Water
Place apple slices in a bowl of water and add a few drops of your chosen essential oil, then stir lightly with a spoon. Drain apples.
3. Sealed Bowl
Place apple slices in a glass bowl with locking lid. Add a small amount of water–just enough to moisten the apples and carry the essential oil. Add a few drops of essential oil to the bowl. Lock the lid and shake apples gently, tossing to coat each slice with the oily water.
Essential Oils to Prevent Browning
All citrus oils work well for this.
- Wild Orange
- Protective blend (Cinnamon, Clove, Orange, Rosemary, Eucalyptus)
