Making your own Foaming Hand Soap is easy and economical. Plus, DIY Hand Soap is much better for your health than regular antibacterial soaps.
Foaming Hand Soap {with essential oils}
For a 50 ml (1.72 oz) mini-pump dispenser:
- 1 tsp liquid castile soap*
- dash Fractionated Coconut Oil
- 3 drops essential oil
- water {distilled or boiled}
For a full-sized, 8 oz pump dispenser:
Note: If you’re looking for a fancier glass dispenser, this one comes in multiple colors and has good reviews on Amazon.
- 2 TB liquid castile soap*
- 1/4 tsp Fractionated Coconut Oil
- 8-10 drops essential oil
- water {distilled or boiled}
*I used Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Baby Mild.

I have been using distilled water, 3-5 dr EO and and 2 T of the Castile soap. I’ll have to add the FCO and see how I like that. I use OnGuard in the winter and I hear another good combo is the peppermint Castile soap with basil and rosemary oils.

Does the coconut oil keep the pump from clogging? We’ve put castille soap in our foaming pumps, but I frequently have to run hot water over them to unclog them.

That’s a great question. I haven’t had any issues with castile soap in my regular pump dispensers, but I’m still fairly new to making my own foaming soap. I’ll have to keep you posted!

I’m so excited about making homemade foaming hand soap ! But my son is allergic to coconut … do you know of any other options to use in place of the Fractionated Coconut Oil ?

Allie–Two ideas:
1. Skip the FCO altogether.
2. Use another oil, like jojoba.

Sara–If you’re referring to the FCO, I believe it makes the soap more moisturizing. (Castille soap can be drying.) But it’s not completely necessary–you can make the soap without the FCO.

Do you use just the ingredients listed? Doesn’t seem like much for a 8oz bottle.
2 TB liquid castile soap*
1/4 tsp Fractionated Coconut Oil
8-10 drops essential oil-
Mike–After adding those ingredients to your foaming pump bottle, you’ll fill the bottle the rest of the way with water. 🙂 (Due to your comment, I realized I hadn’t actually listed “water” as an ingredient, so I added it above. Thanks!)
